1.1 Background of the Study
Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry, plays a significant role in shaping societal narratives and combating stereotypes. Stereotypes about Northerners in Nigeria often depict them as uneducated, violent, or overly conservative, perpetuating division and misunderstanding between regions. Nollywood films, with their wide-reaching influence, have the potential to challenge these stereotypes by promoting balanced and diverse representations (Usman & Garba, 2024). In Bida East Local Government Area, Niger State, where cultural diversity thrives, understanding the effectiveness of Nollywood films in addressing such stereotypes is critical for fostering national unity and mutual respect.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Stereotypes about Northerners in Nigeria continue to foster prejudice and misunderstanding, hindering national cohesion. While Nollywood films are a powerful medium for storytelling, their role in combating these stereotypes remains underexplored, particularly in regions like Bida East. This study aims to examine how Nollywood films challenge or reinforce stereotypes about Northerners and their impact on audience perceptions (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023).
